Instructional Design

Think about instructional design in general. What have you learned this semester about instructional design and development? What about process? What else?

I have learned about the ADDIE model before, but in this class I learned how important the first step analyze is.

We cannot get anywhere until we spend time analyzing what we are doing, for whom we are doing, and how we are going to do it.

Instructional design is complex, but very interesting. It is very important in our daily life. We are constantly learning something, by accident or on purpose, and someone had to design and implement a lesson for us to learn.

Design a lesson means care about those who are going to learn from the lesson.

Design instruction is to draw a plan to deliver instruction. The instruction design needs to know the instruction subject, analyze the audience, and design an instruction suitable to the audience.

How Long Will It Take?

Think about your product. How long will it take to get the development done? Is it feasible in a reasonable timeframe?

The development took longer because I went over each step of the lesson and took a screenshot of it. But I think the screenshots is very helpful for learners who need to see it to learn. It was beneficial for me to, because I got better doing it one more time.

It won’t take too long for learners to go thru the lesson.  The assessments will probably take a little longer. The first time I worked with Photoshop, I had a hard time, to change the color of an object, but I know that some high school students can learn stuff much faster than I can. But since it is posted online, they can also take a break and go back to it later. It is one of the advantages of e-learning.

Project B Self-evaluation

I did much better in the second project. I designed a Photoshop lesson using screenshots. I went thru every lesson in details and I think it is very easy for a high school student to follow the class and learn with each step.

I am a self learned person, and the majority of computer stuff that I know, I learned on tutorials that I found online.

I understand that not everyone is able to learn without an instructor, but for those that are, my lesson was valid. My husband was looking behind my back as I was working on the lesson and he said: “After you finish it I will use to learn Photoshop, since you never have time to teach me.” I thought that it would be very cool if he can learn using my lesson because he is 71 and not savvy at all with computers.

I could have design an even better lesson if timing wasn’t an issue. I was planning to work on it over the Thanksgiving break, but I had unexpected visitors, and I could not concentrate.

I enjoyed designing lessons and I will keep doing it.

Reflection about my product.

Think about your product. Will it do what your client wants? How will you measure it? Are you happy with it? Unhappy? Why?
My product will be designing a Photoshop lesson for high school students. Students are very used to work with the mobile version available on their smartphones, but they don’t know anything about the full version of Photoshop.
My client would like to have an online lesson where students could go and learn the basics of Photoshop, at their own pace. I think the lesson that I am designing will serve my client’s need. After each lesson, students will be asked to perform a task, and by their ability or inability to perform it, we will evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson.
I am very happy with the lesson, because I am being able to use what I learned from a Photoshop class that I took  in the Summer of 2010.

Designing Instruction

What does it mean to design instruction? What skills do you think you need to have in order to do it professionally?

Design instruction is to draw a plan to deliver instruction. The instruction design needs to know the instruction subject, analyze the audience, and design an instruction suitable to the audience.

I was researching online and I found an interesting article about the 10 qualities of an Instructional Designer. It is from the ELearning Coach and was written by Connie Malamad. According to the author, the list is focusing on designing eLearning. Be capable of imagining oneself as the learner/audience member.

Be obsessed with learning everything.

Brainstorm creative treatments and innovative instructional strategies.

Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface, interactions and the finished product.

Write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts and video scripts.

Change of Mind

I was working on a computer basic skills lesson for seniors, but I contacted my local library and it looked like our senior community don’t visit the library very often. I guess it would not work.
Talking to my daughter’s friends, I found out that they all use Photoshop on their smartphone, but they have no idea on how to use the full desktop version.
My daughter said that they take pictures all day long using their phones and they would be very interest on learning Photoshop, specially because two of them are interested in pursue a career in photography.
I already have the lesson plan outlined. I just need to figure it out how to make it available online for them. On my Summer class I learned that there are some educational websites where an Instructor can post a lesson. I don’t know how it could work for me, since I am not a certified instructor.
Figure it out how to have the lesson available online will be my priority this week. With the Thanksgiving Holiday and having family over, I will still have to squeeze some research time.

Group work

What does it mean to manage/regulate yourself (self-regulate) and others? How does it bring you towards goals? How important is communication in this process and what helps/impedes it?

Discipline is the key for anything you want to accomplish. It is even more vital with online classes, where you don’t have a set time to do your work. As an online student I need to set a personal schedule that can match the class schedule, so I don’t miss deadlines.

Working in group on an online setting is very complicated. We don’t see each other, we don’t know each other schedule, and it is hard to set a time when everyone can be virtually together. I had one bad experience on LTEC 3440, where my partner was always late doing his part. I had to do the last part of the project by myself, or I would miss the deadline.

Communication is very important on a face to face class as well as on an online. I guess even more important online. I need to be very careful to what I say, so there are not any misunderstandings or I don’t get my partner/group offended.

I like to work in group, but I think it is almost impossible on an online setting. Some students are way ahead of schedule and some are way behind, and it is hard to get a compromise to help the group.

We have an excellent group in this class, because we attendance was good on the online meetings, and everyone was very helpful to each other.
